What happens when consciousness dissolves back into the universe… and lands on someone’s egg salad sandwich?

This song started years ago as an interpretation of a meme that made Paul David laugh;

when i die my atoms will come undone; i'll be space dust, once again. the wind will carry me; scatter me everywhere; like dandelions in springtime. i'll visit worlds and alien moons; it will all be so damn poetic— until I land on your sandwich.

Having a twisted sense of humor, Paul David gravitated to the grandiose message of being eternal—that once death reaches for you, you don’t cease to exist, you become one with the universe. He loved the idea of exploring worlds and alien moons and laughed out loud with the idea of your “space dust” landing on your loved one’s sandwich. Paul David saw the bones of a song with a message in it—we don’t die and we are made of the same stuff as the Universe.

As a person on a spiritual path, the idea resonated with him so strongly, he fleshed out some lyrics and tied ideas back to his journey. See, when Paul David’s soul mate was killed in a car accident, he was standing in an industrial kitchen making egg salad thinking, “You are off exploring the universe and I am here making egg salad. Something is wrong with this picture.” So he knew the sandwich was an egg salad sandwich (and even the melody notes there are E, G, & G.

Enter the Twin Cities based choir, imPulse. They connected with Paul David to compose a piece that used a RAV Vast handpan and choir to bring the lyrics to life. Enter Stardust Once Again, a traditional choral composition embodying the idea of the meme for SATB choir and RAV Vast handpans. During the composition process for Stardust Once Again, Paul David was inspired by the lyrics and decided it would make a fun pop song too. He laid down an alternative pop groove on drums, bass and guitar, with a sketch of the lyrics in mind, but put it on the shelf to finish the classical version for the upcoming world premiere.

During the summer of 2025, Paul David was going through partial tracks and sketches in his DAW (digital audio workstation) looking for inspiration for his next song when he happened upon a pop sketch called Everybody’s Golden and decided to set down and work out the song. Inspired by Golden from Harry Styles and having recently revisited Everybody Wants to Rule the World from Tears for Fears, Paul David felt inspired to mash the vibes of these two songs together with these unique and funny lyrics.

For the bridge section, Paul David wanted to venture into new territories. He had been learning an Afro-Cuban bembé groove on his drum set for a jazz gig, and he loved the feel of it. Appropriate to the theme of the song, a bembé refers to a celebratory spiritual gathering. What could be more appropriate for re-emerging into non-physical than that celebratory groove?

Continuing his creative collaboration with the amazing Alex Maiers on guitar, the resulting track lyrically ties to most of Stardust Once Again but branches out into new territory with the bembé rhythm and an alternate version of the lyrics.

Unencumbered Stardust is a song about what happens when being human ends—and what comes next. Beginning with the quiet realization that our bodies are temporary arrangements of atoms, the song expands outward—scattering consciousness across distant worlds, newborn stars, and alien moons. But just when the journey feels purely transcendent, the universe delivers a reminder of the absurdity of existence: sometimes dust lands on your sandwich…and what if that dust was your grandma?

Philosophical, playful, and slightly unhinged, “Unencumbered Stardust” explores the cycle of becoming—human to stardust, …and maybe back again.

The result is an incredibly catchy summer driving song.

This is an important song... well, collection of songs, really. I wrote Affirmation in 2016, in fact, some of the lyrics are tattooed on my arm, "No one can silence your song." I wanted something to address how we feel when the world kicks us in the balls. I wanted a song to remind us, we are a part of God--our soul--and the god within us is fucking amazing. WE are fucking amazing. Other people's egos try to take that away, but they cannot do so unless we give them permission. We are beautiful as we are. Our flaws are what make us shine--they let the light in. We are powerful--we are the creators of our earth-experience. We control it by how we move our energy. We are love--we are literally created from an act of love AS love, because that is what God is. Nothing anyone says can take that away from us.

Six cups, the official B-Side, is based upon my tarot reading business and my spiritual path. It recounts the energy of the 6 of Cups card--memories.... but they need to stay in the past. Life teaches us so much, but memories, like candy, are sweet, but carry no real substance for today.

Finally, Together We (TL;DL Grad Mix) is a fun remix of a song I released on the Artist's Prayer EP. It's just me fucking around with sound. Really fun with headphones on.

In The Empire Strikes Back, at one point in his education, Yoda turns to Luke Skywalker and says, "You must unlearn what you have learned." That is this song.

When I was in High School, I was fearless--theater, band, speech team--all those creative outlets and I didn't care what people thought. Then, somewhere in my journey, I learned low self-esteem and I wanted to be one of the "cool" kids... but that changed me. Now, I realize, I was ALWAYS one of the cool, fearless, kids, and I need to get back to that.

A huge thank you to the amazing Alex Maiers on guitars which took this track over the top.

For those of you realizing you need to unwind all that society has taught you, this song is for you!

...well, the REAL version of this song is for you. This is the radio-friendly version.

I was digging through my collection of lyric bits this past summer and came across a partial lyric from the 1990's. I had such success with Artist's Prayer (lyrics written about the same time), I thought I would give it a shot. However, unlike Artist's Prayer, this was not nearly complete...but had some great imagery of reflection.

As a tarot reader, the 6 of Cups has to do with thinking back to the way things used to be. I thought that summed up the lyric remnant I found. I wondered how I could meld those two images.

As my 10th high school reunion neared, I wondered musically what that experience would be like after so many years apart.

Sadly, I did not finish it in time for the reunion, but the thought was there.

In the Empire Strikes Back, at a pivotal moment in the evolution of the hero, Luke Skywalker, his mentor, Yoda, turns to him and says, "You must unlearn what you have learned." That sums up the idea behind this song.

I was always taught to care--to give a shit--and I do... maybe about the wrong things like what people think about me.

I was fearless in high school, but when college came, I somehow learned to care about what people thought about me. My bad.

Then came the sexuality thing... I couldn't be gay, so imagine my surprise to find that first dick in my mouth! Well, that began an emotional rollercoaster ride with other people's hearts as I tried to figure out who and how I loved.

All this to say, I probably need to take Yoda's advice and un-fuck myself back to who I was before I chose (mostly unconsciously) to dull my shine.

I grew up listening to the "Holiday Sing Along with Mitch Miller" album, and when making this track, I accidentally kept all the lead vocals up and it reminded me of that album. So, I re-imagined this song being sung around the campfire with just instruments you could have on a beach or outside around a campfire: guitar, handpan, sleigh bells, Udu drum, hand claps, and of course, voices. ...these voices just happen to know the harmony,

Christmas 2023 was not a typical Minnesota Christmas. For the first time in a very long time, there was no snow. Both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day it rained, and all our plans with family and friends cancelled. This was the 5th Christmas without my family as both mom and dad had passed pre-pandemic and my sister and her family live in Seattle, and I was feeling a certain way.

I wrote the lyrics Christmas Day and the music followed shortly thereafter. I took some of the feelings I was feeling and realized others out there must be having the same kinds of feelings.

I wrote “Doesn’t Feel Like Christmas (Without You)” for those feeling an absence of someone—or something—that was important to them. It could be a lover, friends, parents, a pet… any kind of loss is amplified this time of year.

I harkened back to the nostalgic sounds of the Christmas music I grew up with—Andy Williams and Dean Martin. I pay homage to holiday classics “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, and “Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer” in the bridge section.

I wanted it to feel familiar and seasonal because the season goes on no matter what has transpired in each of our lives.

Doesn’t Feel Like Christmas (Without You) was written, performed, recorded and mixed in the Forgiveness Unity Studios in Plymouth, MN by Paul David with the amazing Alex Maiers on guitars.

Imagine the churning motion of a river as it tumbles over rocks and boulders on it's way to a waterfall. Then the water seems to calm for a minute, only to be propelled forward towards the ocean where it joins in the all and becomes the rhythm of the waves.

This track is percolating, yet relaxing. It's rhythm, yet harmony. Inspired by a minimalist piece I played in college on the Marimba, I wanted to capture the resonant sound of the RAV Vast handpan in both it's percussive nature and the lush overtones you hear while playing it.

Feel yourself sink under the water at :59 as you find yourself in the middle of the RAV Vast! I added acoustic percussion to digital sounds to give color and depth to the groove.

The cool thing about this sound is the melody is pulled from the ostinato pattern. There are only 10 tongues on the drum to produce pitches, yet the sound feels like more.

The instrument used here is a RAV Vast tongue drum, shaker, rain stick, hand made sacred drum, and udu with electronic samples.
