In the Empire Strikes Back, at a pivotal moment in the evolution of the hero, Luke Skywalker, his mentor, Yoda, turns to him and says, "You must unlearn what you have learned." That sums up the idea behind this song.

I was always taught to care--to give a shit--and I do... maybe about the wrong things like what people think about me.

I was fearless in high school, but when college came, I somehow learned to care about what people thought about me. My bad.

Then came the sexuality thing... I couldn't be gay, so imagine my surprise to find that first dick in my mouth! Well, that began an emotional rollercoaster ride with other people's hearts as I tried to figure out who and how I loved.

All this to say, I probably need to take Yoda's advice and un-fuck myself back to who I was before I chose (mostly unconsciously) to dull my shine.
